Revitalisation of cultural landmark – Altmünster Brewery

VOGELWEID’s core concept for investors/clients/basic description of project.

Revitalisation of ‘ALTMÜNSTERHOF’, a former brewery building in downtown Mainz under difficult conditions due to existing casemate and cultural landmarks underneath the historic ‘Kupferberg’. Overland residential and office development on two building sections; connecting levels with parking deck and access areas; underground wine cellar revitalisation in four underground commercial levels.

Specific nature of project

New-build city centre apartments in the historical wine location of the famous Kupferberg in Mainz with parking deck as ground floor and wine bank located underneath. Each apartment has its own private wine vault. The ‘wineBANK’ located even further beneath this as a club concept for professional wine storage and presentation area as marketplace with private access level has become the flagship of the international wineBANK Group.

The project volume amounts to approx. 15 million euros and was realised in the time period between 2011 and 2016.

Architecture / Design

Mainz is one of the ten ‘Great Wine Capitals of the World’, making it a big player on the international wine scene. The state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate is surrounded by the vineyards of the winegrowing regions of Rheingau and Rheinhessen.

The city can reflect on over 2,000 years of history, which dates back to Roman times. It was also the Romans who brought wine to Mainz.

​

On the coves and catacombs of the former Altmünster brewery, which are preserved as a cultural monument, a modern collection of buildings for residential and commercial use has been created, which makes appropriate use of the coves whilst preserving them and making the cultural monument accessible.

​

VOGELWEID acted as a coordinating point for all participants and provided the planning, communication and support for the entire process of this all-round complex project development.

​

The project was awarded the bronze prize at the ‘Oscars’ of the German project development industry, the ‘FIABCI - Prix d’Excellence 2017’ at the formal awards ceremony in November 2017 at the Hotel Adlon, Berlin.
